CONFERENCE 2023 DETAILS

Keynote Speaker: Miss Michigan 2022, Melissa Beyrand

Melissa Beyrand is on a mission to convince students, particularly girls, to consider careers in science, tech, engineering, arts and mathematics, or STEAM. 
It’s not only about improving the long-term career prospects of young Michiganders but it would also help a state that is creating jobs but faces a growing mismatch of talent needs.  
Beyrand, 22, of Milford, has a rather unique platform from which to talk up STEAM professions: She was named Miss Michigan on June 18 and she’s traveling across the region visiting schools, Girl Scout troops, community organizations and others as part of her official duties.

Speaker: Alisha Meneely, Sexting, Sextortion and the Law

Alisha Meneely is the Government Relations and Community Outreach Director for the Michigan Child Protection Registry. Alisha’s priority is to advocate for the Registry across the state of Michigan and help families stay safe while online. She is also part of the Leadership Team for the West Michigan Human Trafficking Coalition. She is a graduate of Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science Pre-law. Throughout her past career she has advocated for social public policy issues such as domestic violence, human trafficking, education reform, affordable childcare and other issues important to women and children.

The Joel Tacey Magic & Juggling Show

Amazing magic, dazzling juggling, wacky stunts, and LOTS of audience participation highlight this exciting show.  That’s right, volunteers will randomly become part of the show, making this a totally interactive experience.  Get ready for BIG laughs and BIG fun for everyone!

Concert Performance by
Connor Lyman, Junior, Garber High School

Connor has a passion for music, theater, and performing arts. He wrote his first song, “Young Inside”, at the age of 15 which was released in August 2021 along with his first music video. His first album of all original music was released in June 2022, with his newest music video release “Hey”  November 2022.

Nicole King, is a former SLS advisor, educator, and administrator who currently works as the Ethical Culture Lead for Consumers Energy. Nicole is a Michigan-native who has performed for many artists like Big & Rich, Brett Young, Justin Moore, Verve Pipe, and many more. This spring Nicole will be paying tribute to one of her musical icons, Jewel, at the Bay City State Theater.

Workshops

The Good, Bad, and Ugly of Social Media! This workshop will be an open discussion on the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to social media and how to get teens to even care about this issue. Teens are more likely to say that social media has a mostly positive – rather than negative – effect on their lives. A majority will say social media makes them feel more connected with friends, more accepted, like they have a support network, and like they have a creative outlet. But is it all unicorns and rainbows? How can teens help create a safer social media environment for generations to come? Us adults need your help, advice and ideas! Presented by Alisha Meneely,Government Relations and Community Outreach Director for the Michigan Child Protection Registry.

This workshop will help you learn how to make smart decisions with your money and avoid debt. Presented by Nicole King, Former SLS Advisor.
How to Make Yourself Stand Out and Lessons Learned! Do you want to stand out from the crowd, to make yourself known? Then this workshop is for you! When you are looking for jobs, colleges, trade schools, or scholarships one of the most important things is to STAND OUT. Learn the tips and tricks to make your applications stand above the rest and advice from first year college freshman on what they wish they would have known. Presented by Jillian Davis and Christina Foley, Wayne State University.
You Matter, We Matter! Do you sometimes struggle with your own self-esteem or self-confidence? Then this workshop is for you. Join us to learn strategies to help us flip the switch and give our self-esteem a boost. Together we will confirm that WE MATTER! Presented by Marvin Mills, J'Lynn Schoonmaker Marion Junior/Senior High School.
Get Your Group in Gear! Does your group struggle with motivation? Do you have a challenging time getting people to attend your meetings and activities? If you answered YES, then you must attend this workshop to learn about the three most important things to motivate your group. It is all about F.A.V. Presented by the SLS Student Advisory Board (SAB) Mariam Kebe, Senior, Clarenceville High School and Shanae Obi, Senior, Taylor High School.
There is no “I” in Team! Do you find yourself always doing everything with no help? In order, to be successful and to accomplish goals, you need help. You cannot do it alone. This workshop will help you learn the importance of working with others and that the more brains you have the more creative the outcome. This workshop is all about laughter and fun while working together. Presented by the SLS Student Advisory Board (SAB) Mariam Kebe, Senior, Clarenceville High School and Shanae Obi, Senior, Taylor High School.
Calm and Collected! Do you often find yourself stressed out? Anxiety high? This workshop will help you learn how to navigate stress through mindful movement, deep breathing, and affirmations. There will be optional blindfolds to use for mindful movement, and time to make affirmation cards to take home. Presented by Morgan Kauffman, SLS Program and Communications Intern.
I am #1! (Taking Care of Myself)! This workshop will introduce the importance of self-care in regard to confidence, hygiene, healthy choices, and preventing stress. Presented by Lacey Mann, Katelyn Trstenjak, and Carina Jones, Atherton High School.
ABCD; Any Body Can Dance! Looking for a way to get out of your comfort zone and learn new things? Bollywood dancing is just the perfect thing you need! Come learn a different style of dancing and learn about different cultures while having fun. After everyone has learned their choreographies, you will be split into two or more different groups to have a friendly competition. Everyone gets to show their hard work and skills at the DANCE. Presented by Sneha Dey, Junior, Warren Mott High School.
You Are Not Alone! In this workshop, you will learn what mental health is, coping strategies, and how to help those who may be struggling. This workshop is the 2021 #SLSTOGETHERWECAN winner for “Hot Spot” Topic: Mental Health. Presented by Mary Mashou, Junior, Warren Mott High School.
